You like table tennis, don't you? If you are thinking about buying a table tennis table for your home, what is the best table tennis table? Well, it depends. What do you want to use it for? What is your budget?

Like when choosing the right bat What matters most is that you choose one that suits you best, in this case the space you have, your budget and whether you want to use it indoors or outdoors.

I find myself this Dione 600 indoor very nice to play, especially because of the price / quality ratio. There are better ones out there, especially if you want to go from amateur to pro level.

But with the Donic you can go ahead for quite some time, up to a fairly high level, without spending too much money right away.

Read on for all our tips. The piece is quite long, so you can skip to the section most relevant to you. Let's start!

I'll give a detailed description of each of these tables further down, but first a buying guide on what to look for when buying one.

How do you choose the right table tennis table?

Having a table tennis table in your home can be a brilliant way to increase the amount of hours you can train, but it's also just fun for the kids to do some more sports at home.

We used to have a table tennis table at home, inside the garage. Nice hitting back and forth; that way you get even better.

Then I started playing table tennis because I liked it so much.

Do you choose a table for outdoor use? Table tops of outdoor models are made of melamine resin. This is a weather-resistant material that is more resistant to rain and other weather conditions.

The frame is also extra galvanized so that no rust will form. However, it is always advisable to purchase a protective cover.

The expensive tables sometimes have an anti-reflective coating: then you can play in the sun without being dazzled!

There are a few things to consider before buying one:

Table tennis table dimensions

A full-sized table tennis table is 274cm x 152.5cm.

If you're thinking of buying a table to use in your home, it's probably worth marking its size on the floor and seeing if it's realistic, so you can play around it (you have need at least a meter on all sides, even if you're just playing for fun).

  • Recreational players will probably need a minimum of 5m x 3,5m.
  • Players who actually want to train need a minimum of 7m x 4,5m.
  • Local tournaments are usually on a 9m x 5m playing field.
  • At national level tournaments, the field will be 12m x 6m.
  • For international competitions, the ITTF sets a minimum court size of 14m x 7m

Do you have enough space? If the answer is no, you can always buy an outdoor table tennis table.

Even if you put the table in a cold garage or shed, it is wise to buy an outdoor table, since the moisture and the cold can cause the top to warp.

Who are you going to play with?

If you're just playing for fun, you can play with whoever is around.

If you're looking for some serious exercise, you need to think about who you're going to play with. There are many options;

  • Does anyone play at your house? If so, you're in the right place and you'll always have a playmate.
  • Do you have friends living nearby who play? Training at home with them saves tuition.
  • Can you afford a coach? Many table tennis coaches come to your home.
  • Could you buy a robot? If you don't have anyone to play with, you can always invest in a table tennis robot

Basically, if you're looking for serious training, make sure you have plenty of space and someone to play with. Once you have that clear, you need to decide how much money you want to spend.

What is your budget?

The cheapest full-size table tennis table on Bol.com (and the current bestseller) is 140 euros
The most expensive table is EUR 3.599

That's a pretty big difference! You really don't have to spend thousands of euros on a table tennis table, but if you want a competition standard table, you should expect to pay at least 500 to 700 euros.

Cheap table tennis tables

Many people think that “a ping pong table is a ping pong table” and decide to buy the cheapest they can find. The only problem is… these tables are awful.

The cheapest tables are usually only 12mm thick and even a recreational player can see that the ball is not bouncing properly.

Some cheap table tennis tables don't even give up on the thickness of their playing surface!

If you're on a really tight budget, I'd recommend getting a 16mm table.

These still aren't great when it comes to bouncing, but they're a big improvement over the virtually unplayable 12mm tables.

Ideally, you're looking for a 19mm+ playing surface.

The importance of table thickness

If you've gotten to this point in the post, I'm sure you've already noticed my biggest concern when it comes to ping pong tables… the table thickness.

This is the most important variable. Forget how beautiful the table looks and what brand it is (and everything else) and focus on table thickness. This is what you pay for.

  • 12mm – The cheapest tables. Avoid these at all costs! Terrible bounce quality.
  • 16mm – Not a great bounce. Only buy these if you are on a tight budget.
  • 19mm – The minimum requirement. Will cost you around 400.
  • 22mm – Good resilience. Ideal for clubbing. Cheaper than 25mm.
  • 25mm – Competition standard table. Costs at least 600,-

Are you looking for an indoor or outdoor model?

If you want to be able to play table tennis outside, you are looking for a table that is weatherproof, but also easy to move, perhaps foldable and the table must also be sturdy and stable.

Most outdoor tables have a wooden playing top that has a high durability and also slows the bounce of the ball.

The thicker the playing surface (and the edge molding), the better the quality and speed of the bounce.

If you do not use the table in winter, it is recommended to store it indoors, for example in the garage. A protective cover can also come in handy.

Indoor tables need a good bounce. Folding and unfolding the table must also be effortless and the table must also be stable here.

Most indoor table tennis tables are made of wood (particle board) which increases the quality and speed of the bounce.

With or without wheels

Think in advance where you are going to put the table. Do you mainly want to put it in one place or do you plan to move it occasionally?

If you think that the table will stay in a permanent place, then you don't necessarily have to get one with wheels.

But if you want to be able to fold and clean the table, then wheels are more than welcome.
Foldable

Many table tennis tables are collapsible, so the table will take up less storage space.

It also has the advantage that you can play table tennis alone, because you can leave one side folded and the other folded.

The ball will bounce back to you through the collapsed part.

Adjustable legs

If you will be playing on an uneven surface, I recommend that you look for a table with adjustable legs.

This way, despite the uneven terrain, the table can still stand straight and it has no further influence on the game.

8 Best Table Tennis Tables Reviewed

Dione 600 vs Sponeta S7-22 Standard Compact

If we compare this table tennis table with the Sponeta S7-22 (see below), we can conclude that they have the same dimensions, but that the Dione has a smaller top thickness (18 mm vs 25 mm).

Both tables are collapsible and for indoor use and have an easy assembly. However, with the Dione you get bats and balls, not with the Sponeta.

And even though Dione has adjustable hind legs, the Sponeta is a bit more expensive than the Dione: you pay for the blade thickness.

When folded, the Sponeta takes up less space than the Dione, something to keep in mind if you're in doubt between the two.

Dione 600 vs Sponeta S7-63i Allround

The Sponeta S7-63i table has the same dimensions as the top two, and just like the Sponeta S7-22 has a 25 mm top thickness.

The Allround is also collapsible, suitable for indoor use and has adjustable hind legs.

Dione 600 vs Joola

The Joola (see also below=) has a top thickness of 19 mm and is the only one of the four that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, the other three are only for indoor use.

Please note, however, that the Joola table is delivered without a net.

The Dione, Sponeta S7-22 Standard, Sponeta S7-63i Allround and Joola all have the same dimensions, are foldable and all have wheels.

The four tables have a price between 500 (Dione) and 695 euros (Sponeta S7-22).

If you prefer a table that is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, Joola could be a good option.

Decide in advance whether you want to use the table indoors and/or outdoors and base your choice on that.

Both tables are not equipped with wheels, but Relaxdays has legs that are adjustable in height up to 4 cm. They are both light tables and they are the same price.

Sponeta S7-22 vs Dione 600

Compared to the Dione School Sport 600 indoor – which I discussed above – the Dione has a smaller blade thickness but comes with bats and balls.

What the tables have in common are the dimensions, that they are both collapsible, for indoor use and have wheels.

The Dione table has adjustable rear legs, something the Sponeta S7-22 does not have.

In addition, the Sponeta table is more expensive (695 euros vs. 500 euros), mainly because of the larger top thickness.

If budget is a big factor, the Dione is a better choice in this case. You even get bats and balls!

How much space do you need around a table tennis table?

So you want a table tennis table, but how do you know if you have enough space available for it?

Did you know that the International Table Tennis Federation claims that competitions require a space of 14 x 7 meters (and 5 meters high)?

That seems almost impossible, but these dimensions are definitely necessary for the pro players.

These types of players play at a great distance from the table and not directly at the table for much of the time.

However, for a recreational table tennis player, these dimensions are neither realistic nor unnecessary.

The space you need depends on the game you are playing. For 1 against 1 matches generally less space is needed than a game 'around the table' with several people.

The more space the better of course, but I understand that this is simply not possible for everyone.

First of all, it is recommended to use tape or tape to mark on the floor the size of the table you have in mind, so that you understand what the actual size is.

The advice that is usually given is that you need a total of at least 6 by 3,5 meters to be able to play table tennis without any problems.

This is usually about 2 meters in front of and behind the table and also another meter on the sides.

Especially in the beginning you will not use the entire space around the table.

Beginners tend to play close to the table, but I bet after a few weeks of practice you'll soon start playing further away from the table!

If you don't have enough space inside but you do outside, an outdoor tennis table is probably a better option.

Check out how much space you need at each of the tables in my top list:

Frequently asked questions about table tennis tables

What is the best thickness for a table tennis table?

The playing surface must be at least 19 mm thick. Anything below this thickness will warp too easily and will not give a consistent bounce.

Most table tennis tables are made of chipboard.

Why are ping pong tables so expensive?

ITTF approved tables are (even) more expensive because they have a thicker playing surface and a much stronger frame and wheel structure to support the heavier surface.

The table is super strong, but will last much longer if it is cared for properly.

Should I buy a tennis table?

Table tennis improves productivity. Research by Dr. Daniel Amen, a member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, describes table tennis as "the best brain sport in the world'.

Ping pong activates areas in the brain that increase concentration and alertness and develop tactical thinking.

Do you really need a table tennis table?

You don't have to buy a complete table tennis table. You can also just buy the top and put it on another table. This may sound a little crazy, but it really isn't.

I assume you are sure that the table you are going to put it on is the correct height. I think most tables are pretty much the same height.

If you want a full size table make sure you go for a 9ft table. Otherwise you have to look for the same as always; the table thickness.

What is the difference between indoor and outdoor table tennis tables?

The biggest difference is the material from which the table tennis table is made.

Indoor tables are made of solid wood. Garden tables are a mix of metal and wood and finished with a coating to protect the table from sun, rain and wind.

Outdoor tables also tend to have sturdier frames, which adds a bit to the overall cost.

What is the control height of a table tennis table?

274 cm long and 152,5 cm wide. The table is 76 cm high and is equipped with a 15,25 cm high center net.

Can you touch the table while playing table tennis?

If you touch the playing surface (ie the top of the table) with your hand not holding the racket while the ball is still in play, you lose your point.

However, as long as the table does not move, you can touch it with your racket, or any other part of your body, without penalty.

Can you waterproof a table tennis table?

Outdoor ping-pong tables must be fully weatherproof if left outside all the time.

You cannot successfully convert an indoor ping-pong table into an outdoor ping-pong table.

You need to buy a table tennis table designed for outdoor use.

What is the table tennis table made of?

Table tops are usually made of plywood, chipboard, plastic, metal, concrete or fiberglass and can vary in thickness between 12mm and 30mm.

However, the best tables have wooden tops with a thickness of 25-30 mm.

Conclusion

I showed you my 8 favorite tables above. Based on my article, you can probably make a good choice now, because you know what to be aware of when purchasing a table tennis table.

The thickness of the table top plays the biggest role if you want to be able to play a good pot and have a good bounce.

Table tennis is a fun and healthy sport that not only improves your physical fitness, but also your mental fitness! So great to have one at home, right?
