What do you take into account when buying the right shoulder pads?

American Football is an age-old sport, and the protective equipment has of course gotten better over the years.

Nowadays you can find a lot of quality shoulder pads from different brands and that are intended for different purposes.

For example, there are shoulder pads that are suitable for every type of athlete or every position, where other shoulder pads are aimed at a certain position.

Special shoulder pads have also been developed for youth athletes.

For American Football, having the right shoulder pads is extremely necessary.

They help increase range of motion and protect shoulder joints, surrounding bones and connecting muscles.

So you really have to look for a pair of shoulder pads that fit you well. However, choosing the best shoulder pads is not always easy.

That's why I'm giving you some important factors to consider below when choosing your next pair of pads.

Protection

The most important things to consider when choosing shoulder pads are protection and mobility. Mobility is essential, but solid protection is key.

It is therefore important to look at the material of the pads, the degree of cushioning and whether they offer additional protective equipment such as a backplate to ensure that you are well covered and protected depending on your position.

Style

There are brands that offer different versions of their shoulder protectors, namely in an 'all-purpose style' versus position specific.

The difference between these styles is based on the different roles on the field, the need for mobility and the type of physical contact that the player in question most often encounters.

Skill players often look for shoulder pads that are smaller so that they can move freely, but good coverage is and remains necessary.

'Skill positions; are the positions that usually handle the ball and are most responsible for scoring points.

Offensive players such as quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers are typically considered skill positions and sometimes tight ends.

Adjustable/adjustable

Being able to make adjustments to the equipment itself is helpful if you need to change position or if your body is undergoing changes.

Shoulder pads often come with laces, straps and buckles that allow you to secure the equipment.

Regardless of your position, it is also simply important to be able to adapt the equipment to your body, in order to meet your needs on the pitch and ensure the right protection.

You first achieve an optimal fit by choosing the right size.

Weight

The different shoulder pads each have a different weight, depending on the material and size of the pads. Weight affects a player's freedom of movement.

You must determine for yourself how much weight you are willing to carry on your shoulders, in addition to the weight of the rest of your protective equipment like your helmet, a possible back plate and/or neck roll.

If the total weight of your equipment is too heavy, it can be difficult to move around on the court.

It doesn't matter which brand you choose; you need to assess the different pads to understand if they are strong and durable enough to withstand knocks and bumps.

There has to be a balance between weight and durability to ensure protection and comfort on the pitch.

Filling

The cushioning or padding is one of the most important things that determines whether your shoulder pads can absorb a blow without experiencing any ill effects.

So check the technology of every shoulder pad you have in mind.

In addition to the different types of infill systems that can be found on the market, there are three main technologies adopted by the major brands in the industry:

TPU cushioning

TPU is the most advanced filling system. It is made of the seemingly indestructible material Thermoplastic Urethane.

TPU does not break down, does not compress, does not allow mold to form, nor does it retain heat.

Schutt uses TPU filling in some of its shoulder pads, for example in the Schutt AiR Maxx Flex (see category 'best for quarterbacks and wide receivers').

With the TPU cushioning system you can continue to absorb blows without going under.

Flat/flat pads

A flat pad design is the most commonly used for general adult shoulder pads.

They are designed inconspicuously but with highly efficient padding that absorbs shock using as little space as possible.

A flat pad design combines closed and open cell foam to successfully disperse the force of a blow over the largest surface area around the direct point of impact.

Quilted brocade filling

This damping system consists of small, padded protrusions in the form of beads. These beads are filled with air and are scattered across the front and back of the pads.

When hit, the pearls release air and scatter over the surface.

This cushioning system also allows air to circulate around your body, so you stay relaxed during the match.

Freedom of movement

Shoulder pads have a direct impact on your freedom of movement on the pitch depending on the size, weight and materials they are made of.

The chosen shoulder pads should be designed in such a way that it does not hinder your mobility.

To ensure this, it is better to invest in lighter shoulder pads that can still do the job.

You need adequate protection while still being able to be mobile enough to avoid injury.

Ventilation

Well-ventilated shoulder pads ensure that the air can continue to flow around your body.

In most cases there is sufficient ventilation in the form of ventilation holes drilled directly into the shell (the hard outside of the pads).

Warm air can escape through these holes while fresh air can circulate. This way you feel comfortable, dry and cool on the 'gridiron'.

You can also search for products that use Z-cool technology. This kind of technology actively uses waterproof spheres or bulges for airflow in the filling.

What position do you play?

Know that there are shoulder pads that are meant for specific positions. So you can also base your choice on your position in the field.

Shoulder pads protect players by absorbing some of the energy of a punch through deformation of the exterior.

At the same time, they distribute the energy over a larger area so that there is less pressure at the collision site.

The weight of the pads and the degree of protection often vary by position group. Defensive players, such as linemen or fullbacks, will want heavier, more protective padding.

Quarterbacks, running backs and other skill positions (skill players) opt for lighter pads for better mobility.

Quarterbacks do not need an extra flap on the shoulders as the inner padding is well able to absorb the force of the impact.

However, when you play in different positions, you need pads that can be used for different positions with a strong and secure fit and a hard shell to keep you protect against injury.

So if you're still trying out different positions or playing on both sides of the field (ie both on offense and defense), the 'all-purpose' pads will be perfect for you.

These pads are usually medium weight and designed not to reach the sternum. With this design you have enough range of motion.

Expect these pads to be a bit thicker and heavier on your shoulders as well. This is necessary for effective tackling.

Size

How do you determine the right size of your shoulder pads?

Measure your chest with a tape measure. Stand up straight with arms at your sides and have someone measure the circumference of your upper torso, under the armpits.

Then measure the width of your shoulders.

Stand up straight with your arms at your sides again and have someone place the tape measure across the tops of your shoulders and measure the length between the two AC joints (the joints between the tops of your shoulders).

The tape measure should be as flat against the back as possible.

Have you taken all your measurements? Then you will look in the size chart of the brand of your shoulder pads. In it you can see exactly which size you should take.

Your weight is also often needed with youth sizes, not with adults.

  • Perfect for linebackers but also for all other positions
  • Light weight
  • Breathable
  • Moisture wicking
  • Removable padding
  • Sustainability
  • Comfortable

Linebackers are a hybrid between defensive linemen and defensive backs. Their pads must therefore also be hybrid.

The Xenith Element Hybrid Varsity Football shoulder pads are the perfect fit for linebackers.

Lightweight protection lets you move with ease; something every linebacker needs.

Other pluses are that the shoulder pads are breathable, moisture wicking and they have enough stretch (so you can put them on easily).

The Hybrid is also the perfect balance between freedom of movement and protection for the modern 'positionless' player.

Xenith shoulder protectors are designed for the dedicated athlete; lightweight and unobtrusive, with full freedom of movement without compromising protection.

Furthermore, the shoulder pads are easy to maintain: the padding is removable and can be cleaned very easily.

Thanks to the adjustable straps with buckle, durable and reliable wearing comfort is guaranteed as well as a close fit.

The Xenith Element Hybrid Varsity Football Shoulder Pads are a great option for any player looking for a new set of solid shoulder pads.

You can use them for a long time and they also fit like a glove on most postures.

The only downside is that if you have broad shoulders, the pads may be a little tighter.

In addition to linebackers, these pads are also suitable for any other type of athlete. Available sizes range from S to 3XL.

However, in case you're still a novice and looking for a cheaper set of shoulder pads, another option is probably better, including the Schutt Sports Varsity XV HD, which I'll explain in a minute below.

  • Maximum comfort and coverage
  • High-quality design
  • Highly durable and shock absorbing
  • Has pre-drilled holes for accessories

Schutt is a brand that is an expert in the production of top quality football gear. No wonder this brand appears (several times) in my top six of the best shoulder pads.

As the name suggests, the Varsity XV HD All-Purpose from Schutt is an all-rounder with a special design designed for maximum range of motion.

This light and sturdy product has an EVA foam-based Heat Moisture Management system that allows heat to escape and water to evaporate to keep the body as cool as possible.

The pads feature ventilated arches and 7mm ventilation holes that minimize the risk of overheating while absorbing shock around the AC joint of the shoulders.

The EVA foam, which by the way has a high density, is great because it offers greater durability, cushioning and freedom of movement.

You can also easily attach accessories to these shoulder pads, mainly thanks to the pre-drilled holes. Furthermore, these shoulder pads have a curved design, so that your shoulders are burdened as little as possible.

To ensure the right fit and coverage, you can adjust the straps. The Schutt Sports XV HD Varsity is also designed with as little surface area as possible for improved mobility and durability.

This is one of the best shoulder pads for receivers, even those playing in the NFL. Shoulder pads are usually an investment, but with the Schutt Sports XV HD Varsity shoulder pads you have a great product at a fair price.

Being an 'all-purpose' model, it is an ideal choice for all kinds of players, as the gear supports all playing styles.

The only drawback is that the shoulder pads can be a bit short at the front. Also, these shoulder pads would not be ideal for players with a small physique.

In case you are a bit more advanced or are looking for shoulder pads for a specific position, you can also get the shoulder pads for 'skill positions'.

Examples are the Schutt Sports Varsity AiR Maxx Flex 2.0 for quarterbacks and wide receivers and the Xenith Element Lineman Varsity Football shoulder pads for linemen.

Details of each of these can be found below.

However, they seem to be a good choice especially for running backs. These shoulder pads are extremely light in weight.

Athletes know that heat can play an important role in performance.

The unique design of the shoulder pads helps to increase airflow to naturally cool the athlete.

It is additionally designed with EVA foam to give athletes maximum impact protection while providing vital shoulder joint protection that is essential for all players in a 'skill position'.

For all seriously trained athletes, the advanced features of the Schutt Varsity Flex 4.0 make these pads a must-have.

A possible disadvantage of this product is that you have to buy a backplate, or an extra back protector, separately, if that applies to you.

Schutt is known for meeting recommended safety standards and thus is safe to use.

Thanks to the deep cut in the design, these shoulder pads also allow you to enjoy maximum versatility and freedom of movement.

  • Powered by D3O energy lock technology
  • Lightweight, soft and flexible
  • Ideal arm reach

The most important thing to consider when buying quarterback pads is that the pads allow enough arm movement while providing good protection.

The AiR Maxx Flex 2.0 shoulder pads are designed with open-cell foam that features microscopic foam to keep the shoulder pads lightweight, while not compromising on protection.

The open-cell foam consists of small chambers that can trap air, which is beneficial as it makes handling blows, punches and tackles more effective.

These shoulder pads are also equipped with D30 energy lock technology. The AiR Maxx Flex 2.0 shoulder pads are one of the best pads for quarterbacks.

With relatively small shoulder pads and larger chest and flank protectors, they give quarterbacks the ideal arm range of motion needed for throwing a ball, while protecting against devastating sacks.

They also have a back plate for maximum protection.

The shoulder pads have air management padding in the area over the shoulder. On the front and back is heat-managed padding with EVA to provide ventilation and disperse impact.

The shoulder pads fit well on the body.

Thanks to the Redundant Energy Lock technology and TPU cushioning, you are provided with the highest level of protection.

The design provides streamlined protection where it's needed.

For many, the Varsity AiR Maxx Flex 2.0 is the best shoulder protector for quarterbacks and wide receivers. These are also perfect for quarterbacks who play in high school leagues.

This design therefore offers not only protection for the shoulder and sternum, but also enough freedom of movement and flexibility.

The shoulder pads are also available in a 'skill position' and 'linemen' model. They are perfect for a lot of running and jumping. Be aware that the shoulder pads have a high price tag.

  • Maximum mobility
  • Extra protection
  • Easy to wear
  • for linemen

The Xenith Element Varsity pads offer a large surface area and maximum protection.

The shoulder pads feature a long, contoured chest plate that allows for a full range of motion – allowing linemen to use their arms and hands without restriction.

They are available in sizes S to 3XL.

The shoulder pads are lightweight. The antibacterial foam and removable cover make cleaning and maintenance easy.

Disadvantages are that these shoulder pads are position specific (so really for linemen) and that they are on the expensive side.

The cordless design and buckles provide durability and reliability. The belt and buckle adjustment system ensures that the shoulder pads stay in place.

In addition to linemen, these shoulder pads are also available in the 'skill' and 'hybrid' models. Element Skill, for example, is perfect for a defensive back or a wide receiver. You have enough room to move and it has an integrated back plate.

Frequently Asked Questions About American Football Shoulder Pads

Finally, I'll answer some questions I often hear about shoulders pads in American Football.

What are the main parts of shoulder pads?

Such a shoulder pad may look a bit complicated. It therefore consists of several parts.

Has

The first part to look out for is the neck. It is the V-shaped or circular opening that you can slide your head through.

When wearing the shoulder pads, they will rest on the bones of your shoulders, while the cups will cover the ball joint of both shoulder girdles.

rivet

This is the connecting part between the outer plastic shell and the inner filling.

This part is usually made of strong and durable material, so that all parts of the shoulder pads stay in place, regardless of your playing style or field position.

Flap

The flap is an extended part of the shoulder pads, which is added at the very top. It offers extra protection to the shoulder joint, shoulder blade and other parts.

Cup

The cup is smaller than the flap, but has the same shape and sits under the outer flap.

To provide additional protection, the cup extends downwards to cover the humerus of the upper arm.

attachment

The attachment, sometimes referred to as a 'bias', is an additional inner cushion that can absorb the shock of a sudden impact with other players.

Central body pillow

In addition to protecting the shoulders, the entire structure of the shoulder pads is designed to protect your chest, especially the ribs, which are quite fragile and can break in the event of a fall or impact.

So, to prevent such disasters, there is a central body cushion in the shoulder pads that covers the entire chest up to the diaphragm.

Belt with buckle

The straps with buckles or hooks will help you secure the shoulder pads around your body, especially around the chest and upper abdomen.

This way, the protective equipment can't come loose during the game.

Did I buy the right shoulder pads?

Have you ordered your shoulder pads online and have they arrived?

The first thing you want to do is of course adjust them! But how do you know if you've taken the right pads?

Slide the pads over your head. Tighten the two straps with the buckle. These should feel tight and secure, but should not be painful in any place.

Check that the shoulder cap hinge is aligned with the AC joints (above the forearm). The front of the pads should completely cover the sternum and the front of the shoulders.

The back should completely cover the shoulder blades without limiting the range of motion of the arms.

If unfortunately something is not quite right, it is better to send the shoulder pads back and get new ones.

Safety is paramount, and you can't risk training and playing with shoulder pads that don't protect you in the right places.

If you have the opportunity to try them on in a store before ordering them online, be sure to do so. If that is impossible, no problem.

Again, take the time to take your measurements and follow the directions in the accompanying tables. If necessary, contact the online shops to understand how certain products fall.

What about women and American Football gear?

American football is also becoming increasingly popular for women. And not only in America, also in Europe more and more women's teams and leagues are being formed.

Although women can go for a standard model of shoulder pads, there are now also pads that are specially designed for a woman's body.

Cups are used that give extra protection to the breasts and a larger cutout at the neck.

So far, only the Douglas brand has marketed shoulder pads for women.

I myself also use these pads and recommend them 100%. They may be a bit more expensive than other designs, but as a woman they give you a much more pleasant fit.

I've tried a lot of models, and the Douglas shoulder pads were perfect for my body.

They are available in cups A and B, where cup A is intended for the small to medium bra size, while cup B is intended for women with a slightly larger bust.

How should shoulder protectors fit?

To understand if your shoulder pads fit properly, put them on and fasten them with the laces or buckles.

Now take a moment to see if anything is not right (too tight or too loose) or pinches when you are standing still or moving.

The shoulder pads should rest comfortably on your shoulders and should stick out about an inch on either side.

The gear should provide full coverage, but you should still be able to move, even if you raise your arms. So practice some moves to check this.

Do shoulder pads expire?

It is recommended that you re-order your shoulder pads between seasons. This will help you avoid damage to your equipment.

For specific expiration dates, it is worth inquiring directly with the manufacturer about the timelines for using and maintaining their products.

How do you clean your shoulder pads?

It is important to keep the shoulder pads clean and dry after playing. The best way to maintain them throughout the season is to wipe them clean after each play.

Check with the manufacturer which products to avoid, but often water, regular dish soap or disinfectant wipes work just fine, followed by a wet cloth.

Then let everything dry and air well. Clean both the inside and the outside.

Some manufacturers offer their own cleaning products, which may be worth considering given the price of the equipment.

How do you take off American Football shoulder pads?

First, you'll need to loosen the straps, laces, or buckles that hold your shoulder pads securely in place. Then you can pull the pads over your head to remove them.
