Do you do a martial art, like (kick)boxing, MMA or freefight? Then your hands and wrists will have to endure a lot.

To ensure that you can (continue to) enjoy your workouts without any problems, it is important to strengthen your hands and wrists extra. This can be done with a good boxing bandage, or alternatively an inner glove.

What should you pay attention to when purchasing boxing bandages?

Perhaps you are purchasing boxing bandages for the first time. In such a case it is of course very useful if you know what exactly you have to take into account.

Stretchable or non-stretchable?

Boxing bandages are available in different colours, materials and lengths. The most commonly used are stretch or elastic bandages.

Cotton or non-stretch bandages are favored by a select group of athletes because they wrinkle less in the washing machine.

The disadvantages are that they are somewhat difficult to attach and you can fasten them less tightly, and therefore become loose more quickly.

It is mainly professional martial artists who go for the non-stretch bandages.

Length

You can choose between short and long bandages. Short bandages measure 250 cm and are often recommended for young boxers or ladies.

In addition, these types of bandages are often used under an MMA glove or punching bag gloves, because they are often smaller and have a tighter fit.

The long bandages, from 350 cm to 460 cm, are most often used by advanced practitioners because they have a good command of wrapping and like to use the extra length to strengthen the wrist and hand.

Bandages from 300 meters are recommended for men and advanced. The longer the bandage, the more firmness.

If your wrists are bothering you, you should therefore ideally go for a slightly longer bandage.

Maintenance

You can wash boxing bandages at about 30 degrees. Never put them in the dryer, that can shorten their lifespan.

Fold them neatly again after washing, so that you can easily put them on again during the next training.

Best non-elastic boxing bandages: Kwon

  • Non-stretch
  • 450 cm long

Do you prefer non-elastic bandages? Maybe because of the convenience - because they don't wrinkle in the wash - or because you fight at a professional level and prefer to box with non-elastic bandages.

In one of these cases, the Kwon boxing bandages might come in handy! Kown is a traditional German company from the martial arts scene with over 40 years of history.

Kwon stands for high quality and advanced developments, including the Ergofoam foam.

The boxing bandages are black in color, stiff and therefore non-elastic and have a handy thumb loop. You can easily close the bandages with the Velcro closure.

The boxing bandages are really top quality and the product generally has an excellent price-quality ratio.

The bandages are 4,5 meters long and about 5 cm wide. They are robustly designed and give your hands and wrists optimal stabilization.

The difference with the bandages of Ali's FIightgear is that the Kwon boxing bandages are non-elastic, while those of Ali's Fightgear are elastic and stretchable.

The stretch bandages are generally used the most, but there is a select group of (professional) athletes who prefer boxing with non-stretch bandages.

Depending on your preference and any experience, one may be more suitable than the other.

In any case, keep in mind that non-elastic bandages are less tight and more likely to become loose. So make a choice between convenience and protection.

If you are a beginner, it is always better to go for the elastic bandages.

Best boxing bandages cheap: Decathlon

  • Cheap
  • 250 cm
  • stretchable

If budget plays a major role, know that you can buy excellent boxing bandages for less than four euros. And did you know that of the current 66 reviews, these bandages have received a rating of 4,5/5?

Cheap does not automatically mean poor quality!

These Decathlon boxing bandages are easy to apply. They have a loop, are flexible and are moisture absorbent.

It fixes the joints (metacarpals and wrists). Despite the flexibility, they are robust and made of polyester (42%) and cotton (58%).

It is recommended to wash the bandages before first use in the washing machine at 30 degrees. Make sure to let the bandages air dry and then roll them up.

The product has been tested and approved by a panel of boxers in the most demanding conditions.

If we compare these bandages with, for example, Ali's Fightgear, we can conclude that these boxing bandages from Decathlon are of course cheaper.

On the other hand, the bandages from Ali's Fightgear also have a great price. The Ali's Fightgear bandages are available in two sizes, namely 460 cm and 250 cm.

However, the Decathlon boxing bandages are only available in one size, namely 250 cm. Do you really have little to spend and is 250 cm the right size? Then you can consider Decathlon's.

If 250 cm is too small, then the 460 cm long bandages from Ali's Fightgear are a good choice, or even those from Kwon (only the latter are non-elastic and probably more suitable for professionals).

Q&A boxing bandages

What are boxing bandages?

A boxing bandage is a strip of fabric used by boxers (and participants in other martial arts) to protect the hand and wrist from injury from punches.

Boxers claim that they feel less pain when punched, so their opponent can feel more pain.

Why should you use boxing bandages?

I list the benefits of boxing bandages for you below:

  • It strengthens your wrist
  • It strengthens your inner hand and therefore the bones in your hand
  • The knuckles are extra protected
  • The thumb is reinforced
  • You will extend the durability of your boxing gloves with this (because the sweat is not absorbed by the gloves, but by the bandage)

What are the advantages of a boxing bandage compared to an inner glove?

  • It is firmer for the hand and fingers
  • Often cheaper
  • Less vulnerable

What is the purpose of boxing bandages?

First, to provide a protective barrier for the fighters' hands. The hand structure is made up of small joints and small bones that are fragile and subject to breakage from the impact of repeated punches.

The use of boxing bandages also protects the tendons, muscles and cushions the impact of the wrist.

Are boxing bandages necessary?

It is essential to use boxing bandages as a beginner. As a boxer, you need bandages that are comfortable, durable, protect your hands and wrist, and are easy to use.

With some practice, you can easily wrap your hands before putting on your boxing gloves.

Should you use boxing bandages when hitting the heavy bag?

The hands are fragile, and boxing can easily injure them, whether you're training on the heavy bag or fighting an opponent.

Boxing wraps protect the small bones in the hand from breaking, prevent the skin on the knuckles from tearing and help prevent you from spraining your wrists when taking a hard punch.
