American Football is one of the biggest sports in America. The rules and setup of the game seem quite complicated at first, but if you immerse yourself a bit in the rules, the game is easy to understand.

It is a physical and strategic game in which many players are 'specialists' and therefore have their own role in the field.

As you mentioned in my post about American Football Gear can read, you need many types of protection for American football. The helmet in particular plays an important role, and I'll go into that in more detail in this article.

While there is no helmet that is 100% resistant to concussions, a football helmet can really help an athlete protect against serious brain or head injury.

An American Football helmet offers protection for both the head and the face.

Protection should be a top priority in this sport. Today there are several brands that produce fantastic football helmets and the technologies are also getting better and better.

One of my favorite helmets is still the Riddell Speedflex. It is certainly not one of the newest helmets, but one that is (still) extremely popular among professional and division 1 athletes. Thousands of hours of research went into designing this helmet. The helmet is made to protect, perform and provide athletes with 100% comfort.

What do you look for when buying a helmet for American Football?

Before you start looking for the best helmet, there are a few things to keep in mind. You want to be sure that you buy one that protects you well, is comfortable, and suits your personal situation.

A helmet is an expensive purchase, so make sure you look carefully at the different models. I give you all the necessary information below.

Check the label

Only take a helmet with a label that contains the following information:

• “MEETS NOCSAE Standard®” as certified by the manufacturer or by SEI2. This means that the model has been tested and meets NOCSAE performance and protection standards.
• Whether the helmet can be recertified. If not, look for the label that indicates when NOCSAE certification expires.
• How often the helmet needs an overhaul ('reconditioned') – where an expert inspects a used helmet and possibly repairs it – and needs to be recertified ('recertified').

Manufacturing date

Check the date of manufacture.

This information is useful if the manufacturer:

• specified the life of the helmet;
• has specified that the helmet must not be overhauled and recertified;
• or if there has ever been a recall for that particular model or year.

Virginia Tech Safety Rating

The Virginia Tech safety rating for football helmets is an excellent way to assess helmet safety at a glance.

Virginia Tech has rankings for varsity/adult and youth helmets. Not all helmets can be found in the classification, but the better-known models are.

To test the safety of the helmets, Virginia Tech uses a pendulum impactor to hit each helmet in four places and at three speeds.

The STAR rating is then calculated based on several factors – most notably the linear acceleration and the rotational acceleration at impact.

Helmets with a lower acceleration on impact protect the player better. Five stars is the highest rating.

Meeting NFL performance requirements

In addition to the Virginia Tech ranking, professional players are only allowed to use helmets approved by the NFL.

Weight

The weight of a helmet is also an important factor to consider.

In general, helmets weigh between 3 and 5 pounds, depending on the amount of padding, helmet shell material, facemask (the face mask), and other properties.

Normally helmets with better protection are heavier. However, a heavy helmet can slow you down or overload your neck muscles (the latter is especially important for young players).

You will have to find the right balance between protection and weight yourself.

If you want good protection, it is wise to train your neck muscles and work on your speed to compensate for any delay caused by a heavier helmet.

What is an American football helmet made of?

Exterior

Where American Football helmets used to be made of soft leather, the outer shell now consists of polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate is a very suitable material for helmets because it is light, strong and impact resistant. In addition, the material is resistant to different temperatures.

Youth helmets are made of ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), as it is lighter than polycarbonate, yet strong and durable.

Polycarbonate helmets cannot be worn in youth competitions, because the polycarbonate shell can seriously damage an ABS shell in a helmet against helmet impact.

Inside

The helmet is equipped with materials on the inside that absorb the impact of blows. After several hits, the materials must regain their original shape, so that they can once again optimally protect the player.

The inner lining of the outer shell is often made of EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) or Thermoplastic Polyurethane (EPU) and Vinyl Nitrile Foam (VN) for cushioning and comfort.

VN is a mixture of high-quality plastic and rubber, and is described as practically indestructible.

Furthermore, different manufacturers have their own padding materials that they add to provide a custom fit and increase the comfort and safety of the wearer.

Compression shock absorbers reduce the force of an impact. Secondary elements that reduce shock are the shock-absorbing pads, which ensure that the helmet fits comfortably.

The impact of collisions is reduced and so is the risk of damaging injuries.

Schutt helmets, for example, only use TPU cushioning. TPU (Thermoplastic Urethane) has the advantage of working better in extreme temperatures than other helmet liners.

The filling of the helmet is either preformed or inflatable. You can use thicker or thinner pads to keep the helmet snug on your head.

If you're using a helmet with inflatable pads, you'll need the right pump to inflate it. The perfect fit is a must; only then can a player be optimally protected.

Helmets are also equipped with an air circulation system so that you do not suffer from sweat and your head can continue to breathe while playing.

Facemask and chinstrap

A helmet is also equipped with a facemask and chinstrap. A facemask ensures that a player cannot get a broken nose or injuries to the face.

The facemask is made of titanium, carbon steel or stainless steel. The carbon steel facemask is durable, heavy, but the cheapest and you see it most often.

The stainless steel facemask is lighter, protects well, but is a bit more expensive. The most expensive is titanium, which is light, strong and durable. With the facemask, however, the model is more important than the material.

the chinstrap protects the chin and keeps the head stable in the helmet. When someone gets a blow to the head, they stay in place thanks to the chinstrap.

The chinstrap is adjustable so that you can adjust it completely to your measurements.

The inside is often made from hypoallergenic foam that is removable for easy washing, or from medical grade foam.

Helmets are simply not cheap, and you should not actually save on a helmet. Getting a head injury while practicing your favorite sport is of course the last thing you want.

However, I understand that you are looking for optimal protection, but you may not be able to afford one of the latest or most expensive models.

For the price you pay for this Schutt helmet, you get a lot of comfort in return.

It may not be the most advanced helmet on the market today, but luckily it features the protective technologies of the Schutt brand.

The AiR XP Pro VTD II is certainly not the best on the list, but still enough for 5 stars according to the Virginia Tech test.

In the 2020 NFL helmet performance test, this helmet also landed in #7, which is very respectable. Perhaps the best feature of the helmet is the Surefit Air liner, which guarantees a snug fit.

How do I know my American Football helmet size?

Finally! You have chosen the helmet of your dreams! But how do you know which size to get?

The sizes of helmets can differ per brand or even per model. Fortunately, every helmet has a size chart that clearly indicates which size should be suitable.

Although I know it's not always possible, it's a good idea to try on a helmet before ordering one.

Maybe you can try on the helmets of your (future) teammates to get an idea of ​​what you like and which size should be right. Read below how to choose the perfect size for your helmet.

Ask someone to measure the circumference of your head. Have this person apply a tape measure 1 inch (=2,5 cm) above your eyebrows, around your head. Note this number.

Now you go to the 'size chart' of the brand of your helmet and you will be able to see which size is suitable for you. Are you in between sizes? Then choose the smaller size.

It is extremely important for a football helmet that it fits properly, otherwise it cannot offer you the right protection.

In addition, be aware that no helmet can completely protect you against an injury, and that with a helmet you still run (perhaps a small) risk of concussion.

How do you know if the helmet fits properly?

After you purchase the helmet, there are a few things you need to do to make sure it fits perfectly.

It is extremely important to follow these steps and adjust the helmet exactly to your head. The last thing you want to get is a concussion.

Put the helmet on your head

Hold the helmet with your thumbs over the lower part of the jaw pads. Put your index finger in the holes near the ears and slide the helmet over your head. Put the helmet fasten with the chinstrap.

The chinstrap should be centered under the athlete's chin and snug. To make sure it's secure, open your mouth wide as if you're about to yawn.

The helmet should now push down on your head. If you don't feel that way, you should tighten the chinstrap.

Helmets with a four-point chin strap system require all four straps to be clipped in and tightened. Always follow the manufacturer's mounting instructions.

Blow up the pillows if necessary

Two different types of padding can be used to fill the inside of the helmet shell. Helmet padding is either preformed or inflatable.

If your helmet has inflatable padding, you have to inflate it. You do this with a special pump with a needle.

Put the helmet on your head and have someone insert the needle into the holes on the outside of the helmet.

Then apply the pump and let the person pump until you feel the helmet fit snugly but comfortably around the head.

The jaw pads must also press well against the face. When you are done, remove the needle and pump.

In case the helmet has interchangeable pads, you can replace these original pads with thicker or thinner pads.

If you feel that the jaw pads are too tight or too loose and you cannot inflate them, change them.

Check the fit of your helmet

Please note that you will fit the helmet with the hairstyle you will be wearing during training and competitions. The fit of a helmet can change if the athlete's hairstyle changes.

A helmet should not be too high or too low on the head and should be approximately 1 inch (=2,5 cm) above the athlete's eyebrows.

Also check that the ear holes are aligned with your ears and that the insert on the front of the helmet covers your head from the center of the forehead to the back of the head.

Make sure you can look straight ahead and to the side. Make sure there is no gap between your temples and the helmet, and between your jaws and the helmet.

Test pressure and movement

Press the top of your helmet with both hands. You should feel the pressure on your crown, not your forehead.

Now move your head from left to right and from top to bottom. When the helmet fits properly, there should be no shifting of the forehead or skin against the pads.

Everything has to move as a whole. If not, see if you can inflate the pads more or if you can replace the (non-inflatable) pads with thicker pads.

If all this is not possible, then a smaller helmet may be desirable.

A helmet should feel good and should not slip over the head when the chinstrap is in place.

If the helmet can be removed with the chinstrap attached, the fit is too loose and will need to be adjusted.

Release the chinstrap with the lower push buttons. Insert your index fingers into the ear holes and press your thumbs onto the underside of the jaw pads. Push the helmet up over your head and take it off.

How do I care for my American Football helmet?

clean

Keep your helmet clean, both inside and out, with warm water and possibly a mild detergent (no strong detergents). Never soak your helmet or loose parts.

To protect

Do not place your helmet near heat sources. Also, never let anyone sit on your helmet.

Storage

Do not keep your helmet in a car. Store it in a room that is neither too hot nor too cold, and also out of direct sunlight.

To decorate

Before you decorate your helmet with paint or stickers, check with the manufacturer whether this can affect the safety of the helmet. The information should be on the instruction label or on the manufacturer's website.

Reconditioning (reconditioning)

Reconditioning involves an expert inspecting and restoring a used helmet by: repairing cracks or damage, replacing missing parts, testing for safety and recertifying for use.

Helmets should be regularly overhauled by a certified NAERA2 member.

To replace

Helmets must be replaced no later than 10 years from the date of manufacture. Many helmets will sooner need to be replaced, depending on the wear.

You should never try to repair your helmet yourself. Also, never use a helmet that is cracked or broken, or that has broken parts or filling.

Never replace or remove the filling or other (internal) parts unless you do so under the supervision of a trained equipment manager.

Before the season and every now and then during the season, check that your helmet is still intact and that nothing is missing.
